How much does a wedding band cost in Ireland?

The Best Wedding Bands in Ireland are a lot easier to book than you think.

When we receive an inquiry from a couple looking for a date its usually the case that they have heard of us or have seen us before and love what we do. We get lots of questions too, like, “How much does the band cost?”, “Do you have any showcases coming up?” and “Do you play the first dance?”. It’s important to think about the memories that a quality band will create for years to come and that will be proven the next morning as its the most talked-about discussion at the breakfast table - that’s what we here regularly from the reviews we get from couples.

They talk about:

  1. The quality of the show provided.

    Flog The Dog provides:

    • A unique and talented lineup of musicians and instruments like the fiddle.

    • A tailorable setlist that couples can select.

    • A highly entertaining, interactive and crowd engaging show.

    • A professional PA & lighting system.

  2. The packages that they included with the band.

    • A band and DJ package is very popular these days among most professional wedding bands.

    • They may also provide Ceremony and Drinks Reception Music which can reduce cost and benefit your finances in other areas of the wedding planning. Lots of bands offer this as part of the band package so make sure to check that out.

  3. A band in demand!

    • Reputation is key when choosing the right band for your wedding. Make sure to check reviews and see what types of venues they have played in before.

    • The date of the wedding is important to consider in terms of the cost. Peak season (May-Oct) and bank holiday weekends will be more expensive than February/March or November, for example.

    • Book your band as early as you can. Don’t leave room disappoint by having left it too late. A wedding band in demand will most likely be booked on the May, or August Bank holiday weekend. Book as early as 18-24 months in advance for peak dates.

So, how do you find a Wedding Band for the right price that includes everything above? That’s the hard part couples will struggle with early on. They might like a brass band but also might want a mix of pop and rock music. As couples move through the lists of bands available for their date, they will quickly narrow in on bands that they like. And when a couple finally books a band, it will be based on what the band means to them personally - a reflection of the music they like, the style they evoke, and they will feel the quality from their videos and from conversing throughout the booking process.

How much does a wedding band cost in Ireland?

Things you should want to avoid!

Here are some tips for finding the right band while excluding the following:

  1. “A band for a Grand!”

    • Sounds cheap? That’s because it is and so too will the quality and the value for money you’ll be getting. The going rate for a Wedding Band is anywhere between €1900 and €2900 with the average resting at €2165*. Every band is going to have a different unique selling point. The more exclusive a band is the higher you’ll have to pay to get your dream band.

*Average spend on a wedding band in 2019 - https://www.weddingsonline.ie/blog/wedding-spend-up-nearly-10-according-to-new-irish-wedding-survey/

    • Consider the going rate when booking a wedding band. Each band will offer a unique experience with some extra add-ons. You might be tied to a budget, thats understandable. But remember, everyone talks about the band the following morning. Booking the cheapest option may or may not work out.

  2. Bands that have a different lineup

    • Avoid at all costs. You’ve seen their videos online and then they have a showcase with a different singer and bass player? Or worse…you’ve booked them and a male singer turns up when you had booked a band with a female? That’s not what you want to happen on your wedding day.

    • Bands who don’t provide a consistent lineup from week to week will lack the “gel” that most professional wedding bands have. A consistent lineup of musicians means that your wedding band will have the experience and “know how” of putting on an amazing show and keeping every on the floor- delivering that quality you should expect.

Checklist for booking a band

Now that you have an understanding of wedding band prices and what to look for to get good value for money, here’s a quick checklist you can use to help you find your dream wedding band:

  1. In demand band -

    • Are they available for my date ☐

    • Is my date flexible ☐

  2. Quality of the Wedding Band -

    • Videos ☐

    • Good website ☐

    • Instagram/Facebook accounts ☐

    • Public Liability Insurance ☐

  3. Check for Reviews -

    • Read the most recent ☐

    • Check Google reviews ☐

    • Are they reputable? ☐

  4. Packages they offer -

    • Band/DJ ☐

    • Ceremony Music ☐

    • Drinks Reception ☐

    • Day after music ☐

  5. Cost -

    • Reasonably priced? ☐

    • Overpriced? ☐

    • “Band of a grand”? ☐

What to do when considering a Plan-B option for your wedding date

Due to COVID-19, couples across the country and beyond are having to make huge decisions regarding their upcoming Summer wedding. Some couples have already moved their March, April and May weddings with the majority of couples in June, July, and August still waiting to see what happens. There’s a lot of uncertainty out there but fear not, this will pass. We have put together some help and advice on what you should consider with your existing date and putting a ‘Plan B’ in place.

Put in place a ‘Plan B’ option

Your wedding date is still booked in so there no need to cancel it just yet. Put a ‘Plan B’ date in place either later this year or in 2021. Speak to your venue and get all of their available dates.

240_F_238711685_x5ccmoazC53JtWj4lqZcpy3vCbZoHrm4.jpg

You need to consider that not all of your suppliers are going to be available if you decide to postpone to a weekend date. It’s recommended to consider off-peak dates and midweek options. This can save you a lot of hassle by going through the process of rebooking new suppliers when you could just as easily move your “dream-team” suppliers to a midweek date.

At this time there is no need to cancel until you’re at least 6 weeks out from your wedding date. Then you can make a decision knowing you have you ‘Plan B’ in place.

Why Midweek?

Midweek weddings are on the rise. With greater supplier availability it’s an ideal option. Out of the 70+ weddings that Flog The Dog played in 2019, 17 of those weddings were midweek. If you’re fixed on a Friday or Saturday, the chances are that your priority suppliers will be unavailable. Choosing a midweek date ensures greater supplier availability, and maybe there’s a supplier out that that you’ve been itching to book but they were unavailable on your original date.

Worried about guests not attending? From our experience of Thursday Weddings, guests will take work off and make a long weekend of it. And because of this coronavirus, they will also reschedule their plans for your new wedding date, after all, they were are all set to come and celebrate your wedding this year. If you have to postpone they will only be looking for the excuse to be there with you on your new date! There’s also a lower drop off rate of guest leaving after the meal.

No one will ever ask what day of the week you got married, they will only remember how great it was.

What about moving your date to 2022?

This is something that couples are considering. If you are set on a weekend date but you are finding it difficult to slot in your current suppliers, maybe you should consider moving your date out 18 months to 2 years. That sounds unthinkable, right? But wouldn’t all of your suppliers be available? Talk to them. See how far in advance they are able to transfer your date.

What does the future hold?

This will all pass and even though it’s frustrating and exhausting to have to sort all your wedding planning, having a Plan B in place will give you that peace of mind if you have to postpone your date.

Wedding Venues in Cork

Here are some of the best, most quirky and reputable Cork wedding venues that Flog The Dog have played in.

Eccles Hotel, Glengarriff, West Cork

The Eccles Hotel, Glengarriff, West Cork - A lovely setting for a wedding and right on the banks of the harbour. The Eccles Hotel is a wonderfully traditional and reputable wedding venue that will light up any big day. Yes, it’s off the beaten track but driving to the location was one of the most memorable journeys the band had this year.

Garryvoe Hotel, East Cork

The Garryvoe Hotel, East Cork - Over looking Ballycotton Lighthouse, is one of the best in the county. The band arrived at the Garryvoe Hotel for 2 weddings this year and each time we were met warmly by staff who were generous in helping us with our equipment. Management were also keen to liaise with the wedding band to make sure they were looked after and that proceedings for the nights entertainment were well executed. And their new renovated west part of the hotel is very quirky.

Fernhill House Hotel, West Cork

fernhill-house-hotel.jpg

Fernhill House Hotel, Clonakilty, Cork - Great staff, warm hotel and great finger food; thats always a plus. The band arrived on time to a wedding in October of this year and usually there would be a small waiting period for the room to be cleared. But not here! The band loaded straight in to a room that was ready to for set up. Fernhill House have a well oiled machine running and deserve the plaudits.
